Timekeeping in Amalthea

The modern system of timekeeping in Amalthea is based upon ancient methods of timekeeping that have persisted on the subcontinent for thousands of biennia.

All of the nations in the Free Federation of Amalthea use the Amalthean Standard Timezone in both domestic and international settings.

Months

Traditionally, months were defined by locations of Yakei, Siwa, and Evonir in the sky against the background constellations, specifically the 12 Great Birds located along ecliptic. A new month would begin any day that Yakei moved past the first major star in a Great Bird. Months are named using the combined 12 pseudomonth names. In modern times, months are named after the pseudomonth determined by the location of Yakei.

Days

Days are numbered sequentially counting upward, beginning with 1, with the day beginning at sunrise.

In the timekeeping system of Amalthea, there are 12 hours in day. They are traditionally separated into 6 Day Hours and 6 Night Hours depending on the location of the zenith in comparison to the 12 Great Birds. Hours are named after the full name of the Great Bird which corresponds to the right ascension of the location of the zenith. Within the Free Federation and many other Amalthean nations, this 12 hour system is used locally. In international contexts, <who> may use FOREIGN_PRESTIGE_HOUR_SYSTEM.
