History

Participation in the Windward wars

Meó motivations for participation in the Windward wars were generally for resources, to "liberate" the ethnic Meó communities in the Shattered Islands, and to restore the Htaevic Empire, which it saw itself as the rightful heir to.

Culture

Languages

Many languages are spoken within the empire, but the two most important, and sole national official languages are Standard Meó and Standard Modern Htaevic. Both are written using the Hlunliw logography.

Government and Politics

Housing

The Meó constitution enshrines the right to minimal adequate housing for all its citizens - the baseline is provided at minimal cost by the state. Such is defined as:

  • At least one room with space for a bed/futon
  • A bathroom containing a shower & toilet
  • A kitchen sink containing potable water & an adequately sized basin
  • Fridge/freezer
  • Stove/oven
  • Access to electricity, heating (including stove/oven if applicable), cooling, potable water, hot water, sewerage, and adequate ventilation. (All utilities provided on a quota basis)

Besides area for beds/futons (which is determined by number of individuals), the services are defined by households, not by individual (i.e. a household of 5 is entitled to one shower/toilet, as is a household of 1).

Further appliances or rooms may be rented/bought from the private sector.

Recently there has been discussion on whether the constitution should be amended to include Internet as a right.

Demographics

Population

The Meó population stands at 456,243,601, according to its most recent census.

Languages

The Meó Union is home to over 400 unique languages and multilingualism is widespread. The two most spoken languages, by far, are the two lingua francas Standard Meó and Standard Modern Htaevic. Standard Meó, based on the Aesanma dialect, is spoken as a first language by approximately 45% of the population, with a furth 20% speaking other forms of Meó. Standard Modern Htaevic is a partly artificial language based on the Yot Siae Kan dialect supplemented with an enormous influence from Classical Htaevic in formal fields. It used by approximately 30% of the population as a lingua franca. Both languages are written using Unified Hlunliw. Htaevic is the compulsory first language of instruction in areas with a Htaevic majority and Meó is taught as a second language, whilst the inverse is true for Meó majority areas. Areas which are neither Htaevic nor Meó majority are subject to different laws. The subjects Classical Htaevic and Meó Literature are compulsory subjects in secondary school regardless of ethnic or linguistic background.

Ethnic Groups

Meó are the majority ethnic grouping, at 45-65% followed closely by Htaevic peoples, at 25-30%, the remainder being a wide variety of other ethnic groups. Ethnic boundaries have never been particularly strong within the region and mixed families are common. The rural areas of the Htasei basin are an exception, being overwhelmingly monoethnic Meó.

Major Cities

Aesanma (49.7 million) and Yot Siae Kan (45.6 million) are the two largest cities in Meó, and maintain a strong political and cultural rival. Aesanma is the capital of <<Meó State>> and Yot Siae Kan of <<Htaevic State>> and are the dominating cultural centers for Meó and Htaevic culture in the nation, respectively. Aesanma is nominally the capital city, although there has been talk in recent years of officially moving the capital to the more politically neutral <<Vïnakàly>>, situated approximately halfway between the two rival cities, and already home to large amounts of political institutions.
